The School of Social Sciences offers courses in Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Data Sciences and Analytics, and Public Policy. The curriculum is proactively aligned to society, governance, and industry changes to ensure that students are prepared for higher studies and the labour market at the end of the respective course.  The School envisages offering application-oriented programmes with innovative curriculum and pedagogy. The courses will provide learner-centric education driven by smart research, smart education, and well-designed extension activities. The faculty will develop smart institutional structures and functions necessary to develop, implement, and assess research, education, and services. Thus, the faculty of social sciences aspire to provide a robust approach towards creative and competent based learning through its programmes.

The School's programmes are anchored on the rigour and relevance of Research and Education, which addresses contemporary social issues and problems through intra-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches. It creates a unique platform for students to engage in research and education, providing ample experiential learning opportunities, skill and competency-based assessments, specialized courses, internships and industry-academia interaction.

The role of the faculty at the School of Social Sciences is defined uniquely; faculty are more of facilitators and constructors of knowledge which sets them apart from the traditional roles of mere content presenters. The faculty and students work in a symbiotic partnership on various issues to study activities, guided assignments and group works, focused group discussions, field works and capstone projects. Each of these activities will have an underlying component of applied learning and research rigour covering pertinent socio-politico-economic problems/issues.

Thus, the emphasis is more on construction, production of knowledge and application-driven learning, which serves the need to meet the current learning requirements of the student community. To this end, the culture of research and education is present across all levels of student learning and faculty engagement.

The curriculum in each of these programmes is outcome-based and offers required theoretical concepts and practical skills in the domain. Students develop application-oriented learning skills, critical, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities for a smooth transition from academic to the real-life work environment by undergoing these programmes.

2. Postgraduate Research Diploma in Data Sciences and Analytics

Data science and analytics is the domain of study that deals with vast volumes of data using modern tools and techniques to find unseen patterns, derive meaningful information, and make business decisions. While data sciences uses complex machine learning algorithms to build predictive models, data analytics aims to extract meaningful insights from various data sources.

As a Data Scientist/Analyst, you are required to understand the business problem, design a data analysis strategy, collect and format the required data, apply algorithms or techniques using the correct tools, and make recommendations backed by data.

The Postgraduate Research Diploma in Data Sciences and Analytics (PGRD-DSA) will help students aid organization to take better decisions and engage in predictive analysis and pattern discovery. It will let the student:

  • Find the leading cause of a problem by asking the right questions
  • Perform exploratory study on the data
  • Model the data using various algorithms
  • Communicate and visualize the results via graphs, dashboards, etc.

  • Students completing a three-year bachelors programme at SSS, RUAS, can enrol for a one-year Post-Graduate Research Diploma in Data Sciences and Analytics.

MA in Public Policy

About the program

Master of Arts in Public Policy (MA in Public Policy) is a field of study that focus on public affairs with a shared interest in making public institutions work. Governance understands and explains the institutional, legal and procedural attributes of how state authority is exercised. Public Policy studies executive decisions and processes evaluates outcomes that aim to achieve collective purposes and provides solutions to problems.

The Master of Arts in Public Policy will prepare students to become critical and analytical thinkers who can develop effective and equitable solutions to public policy and governance challenges. The programme will help students learn about the ideas, mechanisms and practices of public policy as well as the nature, quality and legitimacy of the institutions and practices of governance.
